Biotransformation products and mineralization potential for hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in abiotic versus biological degradation pathways with anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) and Geobacter metallireducens

Abstract: This study investigated extracellular electron shuttle-mediated RDX biodegradation and the distribution of ring cleavage metabolites generated by biological degradation (cells) versus the products formed by abiotic degradation (reduced electron shuttles), and when the two pathways were acting simultaneously. All pathways were influenced by pH. Buffered suspensions (pH 6.8/7.9/9.2) were performed with cell-free anthrahydroquinone-2,6-disulfonate as the sole electron donor, cells (Geobacter metallireducens) + ac… Show more

“…In order to double check the production of these compounds, the UV spectrum (200-350 nm) of these products was compared with that of reference standards. Nitrous oxide was analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) with thermal conductivity detection (Kwon and Finneran 2008a). Anions in groundwater (i.e., chlorine, bromide, nitrite, nitrate, and sulfate) were measured using an ion chromatograph (IC; Dionex 1000) with conductivity detection (Kwon and Finneran 2008a).…”

“…2). It is well known that the reducing capacity of reduced AQDS decreases when pH is decreased from 9.2 to 6.2 (Kwon and Finneran, 2008). Thus, no increase in iron reduction in the presence of AQDS might be due to the lower pH (i.e., pH < 5) in the incubations of soil B.…”

“…In many studies, anthraquinone disulfonate (AQDS) was used as a model humic substance (Aulenta et al, 2010;Bhushan et al, 2006;Collins and Picardal, 1999;Kwon and Finneran, 2006;Kwon and Finneran, 2008;Scherr et al, 2011) to study extracellular electron transfer in the reduction of halogenated and nitrous organic compounds.…”
