Bird number dynamics during the post-breeding period at the Tömörd Bird Ringing Station, western Hungary

Abstract: Gyurácz J., Bánhidi P., Góczán J., Illés P., Kalmár S., Koszorús P., Lukács Z., Németh C. and Varga L. 2017. Bird number dynamics during the post-breeding period at the Tömörd Bird Ringing Station, western Hungary. Ring 39: 23-82.The fieldwork, i.e. catching and ringing birds using mist-nets, was conducted at Tömörd Bird Ringing Station in western Hungary during the post-breeding migration seasons in 1998-2016. Altogether, 106,480 individuals of 133 species were ringed at the station. The aim of this paper was… Show more

“…Differences in the observer effort notwithstanding, records of YBW in the Iberian Peninsula were under 1% of those recorded in United Kingdom, and under 8% of those in both Sweden and France, but even here a 2–3 fold increase has been documented in the last 10 years [ 92 ]. In Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, which sit much closer to the Siberian breeding grounds of the YBW but considerably further south than the aforementioned countries, there are only a handful of records (Hungary: 6 [ 93 ]; Romania: 10 [ 94 ]; Bulgaria: 5 [ 95 ]), most of which come from ringing records, as opposed to observations.…”

“…However, the annual captures did not show a linear trend between 1998 and 2021, but fluctuated, being very high in a few years for Blue Tit, 2010. In these invasion years, the most birds were captured primarily in the second half of the autumn migration (Gyurácz et al 2017). The temporal variation of annual captures and the annual capturerecapture proportions of ages and sexes of the closely-related tit species were similar.…”

“…The nets were placed evenly in the four habitat types. Ringing sessions lasted from sunrise to noon (CES) or dusk, except on rainy and stormy days when the nets were closed; numbers, locations, types, and lengths of mist nets were held constant (Gyurácz et al 2017). All birds were ringed, sexed and aged according to Svensson (1992).…”

“…In addition to the field observation data, we also used ringing data from 3 Actio Hungarica camps (Szalonna, Tömörd, Ócsa) in our analysis. For descriptions of the three sites and the ringing work see Farkas et al (2014), Csörgő et al (2016) and Gyurácz et al (2017). When defining migration periods, only new ringings were considered, not recaptures (Szalonna: 920, Tömörd: 768, Ócsa: 167 individuals).…”
