Bisphenol A Removal from Water by Activated Carbon. Effects of Carbon Characteristics and Solution Chemistry

Abstract: The present study aimed to analyze the behavior of different activated carbons in the adsorption and removal of bisphenol A (2-2-bis-4-hydroxypheniyl propane) from aqueous solutions in order to identify the parameters that determine this process. Two commercial activated carbons and one prepared in our laboratory from almond shells were used; they were texturally and chemically characterized, obtaining the surface area, pore size distribution, mineral matter content, elemental analysis, oxygen surface groups, … Show more

“…The pH is an important parameter, since it controls the electrostatic interactions between the adsorbate and the adsorbent, having great influence in the adsorption process (BAUTISTA-TOLEDO et al, 2005). The determined point of zero charge (pH PZC ) was 2.41, which indicates that the material tends to present negative charges in solutions with pH higher than 2.41.…”

“…Several solid materials have been applied to remove endocrine disruptors in water, and among those, the processes and techniques currently in using activated carbon, are promising due to their high efficiency in removing various contaminants [11,12]. PAC (powdered activated carbon) is more widely used in relation to GAC (granular activated carbon); it is more common to apply PAC in conventional treatment stations, because it is easier to control the dosage and needs a lower investment cost.…”
