Bistatic experiment with the UWB-CARABAS sensor &amp;#x2014; First results and prospects of future applications

Compared with the traditional one-stationary bistatic narrowbeam-narrowband (NB) synthetic aperture radar (SAR), the coupling between the azimuth and range wavenumbers for the one-stationary bistatic ultrahigh frequency (UHF) ultrawidebeam-ultrawideband (UWB) SAR is much larger due to the large fractional signal bandwidth and wide antenna beamwidth, which may affect the behavior of spatial resolutions. Considering the wavenumber coupling, the more accurate spatial resolutions for the one-stationary bistatic UHF UWB SAR are proposed based on the wavenumber domain support of the scattering target in this paper. First, the one-stationary bistatic SAR imaging geometry is provided, and then the spatial wavenumber of the scattering target for the one-stationary bistatic UHF UWB SAR is analyzed. Second, based on the spatial wavenumber spectrum, spatial resolutions of the one-stationary bistatic UHF UWB SAR are derived in detail. In addition, the squint angles of radars are considered in the derivation of the spatial resolutions. Besides, the narrowing/broadening factors defined as the ratio of the proposed spatial resolutions to traditional spatial resolutions are presented, which describe the effects of the fractional bandwidth and associated integration angle on the spatial resolutions. Finally, simulation results are given to prove the correctness and validity of the proposed resolutions.Index Terms-One-stationary bistatic synthetic aperture radar (OS-BiSAR), spatial resolution, ultrahigh frequency (UHF), ultrawidebeam-ultrawideband (UWB), wavenumber domain support.

Low frequency ultrawideband (LF UWB) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has lately become of a particular interest to SAR community. Monostatic and bistatic LF UWB SAR system has the well foliage penetrating capability, high-resolution imaging and providing the increased information. In 2015, a monostatic and bistatic LF UWB SAR imaging experiment was conducted. In this experiment, the monostatic and bistatic data were collected simultaneously by operating a moving vehicle-based radar in the SAR mode, in conjunction with a stationary ground-based receiver. The aim was to investigate the imaging property of the bistatic LF UWB SAR system. The one pulse per second (1 PPS) signal in combination with the global position system (GPS) disciplined 100 MHz oscillator from the GPS receivers was used to implement the time and frequency synchronization in this SAR system. The bistatic SAR image was obtained by the subaperture spectrum-equilibrium method integrated with the fast factorized back projection (FFBP) algorithm. Bistatic experiment results are show to prove the validity of the bistatic LF UWB SAR imaging experiment.

The precise disposal of azimuth variance of range cell migrations and motion errors in the one-stationary bistatic very high frequency/ultrahigh frequency ultra-wideband synthetic aperture radar imaging is a real challenge for efficient frequencydomain algorithms, but can be precisely managed by time-domain approaches. In this study, a novel bistatic fast factorised backprojection (BFFBP) algorithm is presented, which can deal with these two effects accurately and achieve the computational performance in parity with frequency-domain algorithms. First, the imaging geometry with arbitrary motion in elliptical polar coordinate is provided, and the analytical expression of the bistatic backprojection algorithm in this coordinate system is derived, which provides a theory basis for the proposed algorithm. Then, based on the subaperture imaging geometry, the sampling requirements considering motion errors is deduced, which offers the optimal tradeoff between the imaging quality and computational speed. The advantage of using elliptical polar coordinate system for implementing the BFFBP algorithm is analysed. Finally, the implementation and computational burden of the BFFBP algorithm are discussed. Simulation results are shown to prove the correctness of the theory analysis and validity of the proposed approach.
