Bit rate and wavelength transparent all-optical clock recovery scheme for NRZ-coded PRBS signals

Abstract: All-optical clock recovery from 40-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) pseudorandom binary sequence data streams based on self-pulsating lasers is presented. A compact preprocessing circuit is utilized to convert an NRZ signal to a pseudoreturn-to-zero sequence before injecting into the optical clock. It comprises a semiconductor optical amplifier followed by a periodical wavelength-division-multiplexing demultiplexer filter. A stable sinusoidal clock signal with a root-mean-square jitter below 700 fs is detected at … Show more

“…The RZ-like format is commonly referred to as pseudo-RZ (PRZ) format. Conventional approaches for NRZ-to-PRZ format conversion use linear [29,30] and nonlinear [31,32] approaches, as well as integrated optics in the form of asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers (AMZIs) [33]. Most recently [34], we proposed and reported initial demonstration of using silicon microring notch filters for NRZ-to-PRZ format conversion.…”

“…[1], [2] To realize the real time optical signal processing at the receiver unit, we need the clock information of the received signal to determine the value of each bit. Many researches have been done for this area under the name of optical clock recovery [3], [4]. A number of optical clock recovery methods have been proposed and demonstrated for high speed optical communications for a return-to-zero (RZ) signal of which data format has clock information in itself.…”

“…Latter result has practical relevance because applications of such devices in high bit-rate optical communication require extremely stable self-pulsations and chaos must be avoided. 21 The vast literature on delayed feedback control nearly exclusively considers the stabilization of periodic orbits. Optical delayed feedback control, however, represents a different and new class of chaos control because the stabilized periodic pulsation is not simply an orbit but it is a periodically modulated wave.…”
