Bituminous Pavement Reinforcement with Fiber: A Review

Abstract: This paper attempts to display, analyze and discuss the literature affiliated to the previous research data on road surfacing in pavement engineering reinforcement. In this paper, a review of the background and present status of road surfacing is also provided for supportive explanation of the significance of fiber-reinforced asphalt pavement HMA and its role in providing effective and durable surfacing for heavy-trafficked roads. The paper attempts to clarify some of the terms and notions related to the discu… Show more

“…Asphalt pavement is more flexible than concrete pavement, with low noise, good skid resistance, good driving comfort, high stability, extended functional plasticity, and other properties that allow it to be used in broader applications [ 2 ]. Fiber-reinforced asphalt, a composite material, was chosen as the pavement material, and it was demonstrated that the fiber could greatly increase resistance to the flow, rutting, water damage, and fatigue cracking of asphalt [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…In recent years, the application research of fiber in asphalt mixture has become more and more extensive. The prominent feature of fiber asphalt mixture is that it can prevent the expansion of cracks in asphalt pavement, reduce the occurrence of hightemperature rutting, make up for the deficiency of high low-temperature brittleness, and play a significant role in prolonging the service life of asphalt pavement [3,4].…”

“…Numerous types of polymers have been employed throughout the decades, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), aramid, and a combination of those. There are several key factors that make fibre an excellent additive for an AC mix, namely strength, stiffness, density, and the network matrix formed in the body of a specimen through its length/diameter ratio [31]. Aramid is well-known for its high thermal and chemical stability in addition to its stiffness and tenacity [32] [33], enabling it to form a highly durable fibrous network inside an AC mix that will lead to the improvement in fatigue life and rutting resistance [34]- [36].…”
