Bizarre calcaneal spur: A case report

Abstract: HighlightsCalcaneal spur is abnormal bone outgrowth at the inferior part of the calcaneus. This is a rare case of symptomatic plantar fasciitis with abnormal calcaneal spur.Radiological results show a very large, bizarre-shaped calcaneal spur. The spur length, measured on the radiograph, was very long (∼23 mm).The patient was treated conservatively, and he fully recovered his foot function.

“…This is also associated with the development of calcaneal spur, there is no clear evidence regarding their association. 19,20 According to the available literature, 30% of the calcaneal spurs are asymptomatic and are associated with plantar fasciitis in 80% of the cases. 1,21 A total of 15.5% of the normal population can reveal a calcaneal spur and there is no clear evidence regarding their association with the size and direction of the spur with heel pain.…”

“…The most typical location for a bony spur is the calcaneal spur or entophyte, which is an irregular bone protrusion from the fibrocartilaginous attachment site, specifically the plantar fascia ligament. (1) The osseous spurring of the calcaneus plantar portion was originally identified by German doctor Plattner in 1900 when he coined the name Kalkaneussporn (calcaneal spur). It is divided into two types: dorsal/posterior and plantar/inferior (2).…”
