Blackfly (Diptera, Simuliidae) communities and species richness estimation in Carpathian montane streams

Abstract: Abstract:The present work gives the result of blackfly fauna research of the Slovenský raj (West Carpathians, Slovakia). Our aim was to describe the composition of blackfly communities, find indicator species for communities, describe environmental factors affecting communities and determine the potential changes in species richness. Research was carried out in 2007 and 2008. The presence of 22 species of blackflies was confirmed at 20 sites in the area of Slovenský raj. 12 species were recorded for the first … Show more

“…The mosquitoes that transmit Plasmodium may favour the open areas created in humanmodified habitats (Patz, Graczyk, Geller, & Vittor, 2000;Vittor et al, 2009;Yasuoka & Levins, 2007). On the contrary, Simulium black flies, vectors of Leucocytozoon, need lotic microhabitats for laying their eggs and are particularly sensitive to physicochemical characteristics of streams (Stangler, Halgos, & Beracko, 2013). This could contribute to a preference of the vectors for pristine forest where flowing water is not disturbed or polluted (Docile, Figueir o, Gil-Azevedo, & Nessimian, 2015).…”

“…Blackflies colonize running water ecosystems in various continents, except Antarctica [2]. They also occur abundantly in some areas of Europe from the Baltic States [3][4][5], Great Britain, and Ireland [6,7] in the north through the countries of the western [8] and central [9][10][11][12][13][14] parts of the continent to Spain [15,16] and Italy [17,18] in the south.…”
