Blast Test and Failure Mechanisms of Soft-Core Sandwich Panels for Storage Halls Applications

Abstract: In this paper, an experimental investigation is presented for sandwich panels with various core layer materials (polyisocyanurate foam, mineral wool, and expanded polystyrene) when subjected to a justified blast load. The field tests simulated the case for when 5 kg of trinitrotoluene (TNT) is localized outside a building’s facade with a 5150 mm stand-off distance. The size and distance of the blast load from the obstacle can be understood as the case of both accidental action and a real terroristic threat. Th… Show more

“…The 1 kg of TNT, refers to the situation when industrial infrastructural elements, such as gas cylinders, are located at a close distance from the structural elements. For example, in case of accidental explosion of 20L of propane cylinder or 20L of acetylene cylinder, they release blast energy equivalent to that of 0.82 kg and 0.86 kg of TNT, respectively (Studziński et al, 2021, Sielicki et al, 2017.…”

“…Sandwich structures are widely applied in the aerospace, vehicle, ship, and packaging industries owing to their advantages of being lightweight, having a high specific strength, a strong crashworthiness, and a high energy absorption efficiency. In recent years, due to their excellent energy absorption capacity, they have received increasing attention in the field of structure protection [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. In general, a sandwich structure is composed of solid face and back plates, and a lightweight cellular core.…”

“…Additionally, the debris from such a barrier is less likely to occur since the steel is less brittle than concrete. Also, the soft-core sandwich panels for civil structures (Studziński et al., 2015), may be adopted as a blast mitigation barrier (Studziński et al., 2021). Still, those structures are often analysed for static scenarios (Pozorska and Pozorski, 2017).…”
