“…Figure 1 a shows the absorption peaks at 1780 cm −1 and 1860 cm −1 , respectively, belonging to –C=O– of the maleic anhydride ring in EMA [ 43 ]. After the hydrolysis of EMA with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid, it is indicated by Figure 1 b,c that the peaks at 1780 cm −1 and 1860 cm −1 are weakened or even absent, while the absorption peak of the stretching vibration at 1695 cm −1 for –C=O of maleic acid unit is significantly enhanced, demonstrating that the ring of maleic anhydride unit of EMA was opened in the hydrolysis reaction, forming both HEMA-1 and HEMA-2 [ 44 ]. However, the stretching vibration peaks at 1226 cm −1 and 1160 cm −1 for –C–O–C– of maleic anhydride unit still existed, indicating that the degree of hydrolysis reaction did not reach 100%, in agreement with the literature result [ 43 ].…”

“…Wharton’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSC) from human umbilical cords were collected from healthy donors who underwent cesarean sections after full-term pregnancy at the Hospital Luis Tisné Brousse obstetrics and gynecology service as part of an established collaboration with Palma’s laboratory. The WJ-MSC cell culture was followed as previously described. Cell metabolic activity measurement was performed using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) colorimetric assay with slight modifications. Briefly, 1 × 10 5 cell/mL WJ – MSC cells were plated into a 96-well plate in 150 μL of Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) containing 10% fetal bovine serum, 1% penicillin, and streptomycin.…”

“…PSMA was synthesized through radical polymerization by mixing equimolar amounts of previously purified styrene and MA monomers under vacuum at 60 °C, and 2,2′azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN, >98%, from Sigma-Aldrich) was used as the initiator in anhydrous benzene at 60 °C in a N 2 atmosphere for 2 h. A viscosimetric average molecular weight (M̅ v ) of 63 000 g/mol was determined by viscometry according to the Mark−Houwink-Sakurada relationship in tetrahydrofuran (THF, ≥99.0%, from Sigma-Aldrich) at 30 °C. 25 Polydispersity of PSMA was obtained by size exclusion chromatography using a Waters Styragel HMW-6E column, solutions of 1 mg/mL in THF as the solvent, and polystyrene standards (18,200,42,300,83,000, and 189,000 Da) with a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. A polydispersity value of 1.2 was obtained.…”
