Blockchain and IoT based Food Traceability for Smart Agriculture

Abstract: Food safety is becoming more and more serious topic worldwide. To tackle the food safety issues from the technical aspect, people need a trusted food traceability system that can track and monitor the whole lifespan of food production, including the processes of food raw material cultivation/breeding, processing, transporting, warehousing, and selling etc. In this paper, we propose a trusted, self-organized, open and ecological food traceability system based on blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT) technolog… Show more

“…Indeed, based on new technology, decentralized platforms implement the basic principle of the digital economy -the integration of management processes and processes of subject activity. For example, at present blockchain is used in agriculture in the water management system [4], food production using artificial intelligence [5]. The widespread use of blockchain technology in agribusiness potentially increases the profits of agricultural enterprises due to the fact that transaction costs will be lower, the higher the degree of trust between the parties to the contractual relationship.…”

“…In the greenhouses, IoT sensors act as a private local blockchain that centrally managed by the owner. Lin et al (2018) propose a blockchain and IoT based smart agriculture framework for general use. The core of the framework is a platform that helps establish trust among actors using blockchain.…”

“…As such, many systems have been developed that focus not only on classical agricultural applications [45], such as crop monitoring [40], disease countermeasures [46] and pest detection [47], but also on various other aspects of farming, as stated in [4], where the needs of future agriculture are determined. These include (but are not limited to) management of underground planting [48], modern drone spraying and control techniques [49,50], robotic enhancements [28,51], security and privacy matters regarding the sensed data [52,53] and of course food safety and quality issues [9,10,37].…”

“…The aggregation and analysis of large volumes of data within short time periods grants producers the ability to act forthwith, contributing to the prediction and prevention of crop damage, the frequency of which never ceases to decrease, potentially as a consequence of climate change [6,7]. Thus, intelligent agriculture and other cross-disciplinary approaches in agricultural production, such as the one found in [8], is not merely a passing trend in innovation, but an auspicious endeavor for supplying satisfactory and adequate levels of food production of high quality [9,10], for an increasingly growing global population.…”
