Blockchain security of autonomous maritime transport

Abstract: Autonomous ships are in experimental stage nowadays with Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) already defi ned by IMO. Since MASS rely heavily on communications, security of communication systems and data security is critical. Secure communication is required to avoid bad actors to interfere with the communications or seizing control of a autonomous ship. In this paper, implementation of blockchain technology to improve autonomous vessels control security is investigated. This technology is already used in… Show more

“…The blockchain is an innovative technology that promises to disrupt the applications and use-cases across most industry sectors, including the maritime industry [1]. The blockchain technology has already been introduced into the maritime industry in the form of a bill of lading, regulatory compliance, etc., and should bring cost-saving to the industry [33].…”

“…The first is to create a continuous monitoring system that can provide real-time situation awareness of the ship's security health status [65,67,68]. In this context, blockchain technology has been proposed to improve autonomous vessels' control security in many studies [65,[69][70][71]. The main feature of blockchain technology, including traceability, transparency, auditability, immutability, and decentralisation, is proposed to enable secure communication and secure storage of the data exchanged between vessels and the shore control centre.…”

“…Moreover, to demonstrate blockchain applications in shipping, Komathy [32] presented a proof-of-concept of the distributed blockchain shipping (DBCS) architecture that brings real-time international shipping activities, including banking, manufacturing, and insurance under a secured IoT system. Finally, applications of blockchain technology in maritime autonomous surface ship (MASS) operations have been investigated [33][34][35].…”

“…Artificial intelligence (AI) could be applied in a blockchain platform to deliver bug-free smart contracts, for example, in case of violations of conditions encoded in a smart contract, the system would refund payment automatically [19]. Further, AI-enabled blockchain applications are evident in autonomous ship operations [33][34][35]. The convergence of blockchain, IoT, and AI technologies, as such, will drive innovative business model developments and digital transformation across these industries.…”
