The aim of this paper is to review the current and most relevant literature on the use of altmetric providers since 2012. This review is supported by a meta-analysis of the coverage and metric counts obtained by more than 100 publications that have used these bibliographic platforms for altmetric studies. The article is the most comprehensive analysis of altmetric data providers (Lagotto, Altmetric.com, ImpactStory, Mendeley, PlumX, Crossref Event Data) and explores the coverage of publications, social media and events from a longitudinal view. Disciplinary differences were also analysed. The results show that most of the studies are based on Altmetric.com data. This provider is the service that captures most mentions from social media sites, blogs and news outlets. PlumX has better coverage, counting more Mendeley readers, but capturing fewer events. CED has a special coverage of mentions from Wikipedia, while Lagotto and ImpactStory are becoming disused products because of their limited reach.

Diante da profusão de preprints durante a pandemia, a proposta do artigo é entender como ocorreu a circulação desses produtos científicos, em especial, nas matérias veiculadas em portais de notícia, quais enquadramentos são utilizados e como essas matérias são percebidas pelos usuários no Facebook. Os procedimentos metodológicos empregados na pesquisa foram a análise de dados bibliográficos, a análise de enquadramento midiático e a escuta social. Os resultados do estudo indicam que 38,6% das matérias mencionam que a pesquisa divulgada está em processo de avaliação, 27,6% das notícias omitem essa informação e 19,6% fazem menções superficiais ou errôneas. Quanto aos enquadramentos, foram identificadas notícias com ênfase nas crises política e epistêmica, e, em menor proporção, em checagem de fatos e construção crítica e explicativa, sendo que todas elas trazem controvérsias científicas como centro da discussão. Como reflexos desses enquadramentos, observa-se a polarização da ciência entre usuários e manifestações de descrença na ciência e na mídia como comportamentos recorrentes.

In the era of digitization and Open Access, article-level metrics are increasingly employed to distinguish influential research works and adjust research management strategies. Tagging individual articles with digital object identifiers allows exposing them to numerous channels of scholarly communication and quantifying related activities. The aim of this article was to overview currently available article-level metrics and highlight their advantages and limitations. Article views and downloads, citations, and social media metrics are increasingly employed by publishers to move away from the dominance and inappropriate use of journal metrics. Quantitative article metrics are complementary to one another and often require qualitative expert evaluations. Expert evaluations may help to avoid manipulations with indiscriminate social media activities that artificially boost altmetrics. Values of article metrics should be interpreted in view of confounders such as patterns of citation and social media activities across countries and academic disciplines.
