Este estudo busca compreender como o tema da automutilação é retratado em comunidades online brasileiras, apresentando uma reflexão sobre suas particularidades, as narrativas produzidas, as interações estabelecidas e a finalidade desse espaço digital. Trata-se de pesquisa qualitativa feita em ambiente digital por meio da observação silenciosa de comunidades online do Facebook, selecionadas a partir do número de participantes e de interação. A observação foi orientada por um roteiro prévio e as postagens foram registradas por print screen. As publicações foram organizadas nas seguintes categorias temáticas: caracterização e funcionamento das comunidades; violência autoinfligida (automutilação e suicídio); motivações para o ato; estratégias para impedir o ato; e experiência amorosa. Os resultados revelaram que as comunidades se orientavam de maneira positiva, defendiam a prática da automutilação, com ausência de regulamentação, o que garantiu a livre expressão de seus participantes, havia relatos detalhados com descrição do método praticado, dos objetos utilizados e dos mais eficazes para tal e de como ocultar os ferimentos. Embora compartilhassem o medo da descoberta, publicavam imagens de suas próprias cicatrizes e ferimentos, materializando na rede discursos de sofrimento, bem como a glamourização dos cortes, o sentimento de prazer e o senso de pertença por ser também uma marca identitária. Nossos achados permitem inferir que jovens que se mutilam compartilham suas experiências com outros jovens em sofrimento, sem a mediação de um profissional, sendo premente considerar os possíveis impactos à saúde mental.

Purpose People who experience mental illness often demonstrate limited help-seeking behaviours. There is evidence to suggest that media content can influence negative attitudes towards mental illness; less is known about how media impacts help-seeking behaviours. The purpose of this study is to identify if media plays a role in people’s decisions to seek help for their mental health. Design/methodology/approach The databases Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, MEDLINE, APA PsycArticles, APA PsycInfo, Social Sciences Full Text [H.W. Wilson] and Soc Index were systemically searched for papers in the English language that investigated the link between media and help-seeking for mental illness. Findings Sixteen studies met eligibility criteria. There was some evidence to suggest that various forms of media – including video and online resources – can positively influence help-seeking for mental health. Print media had some limited effect on help-seeking behaviours but was weaker in comparison to other forms of media. There was no evidence to suggest that media discourages people from seeking help. Originality/value This review identified that, given the heterogeneity of the included papers, and the limited evidence available, there is a need for more focused research to determine how media impacts mental health-related help-seeking behaviours.

Emerging evidence indicates that perceptions of self-harm behaviours and self-harm scars may thwart recovery from depression, yet limited research has explored adolescent accounts of their self-harm and scars during therapy. This study sought to explore how adolescents describe their self-harm behaviours and scars during Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and explore the sociocultural discourses that may influence these descriptions. The participants were six female adolescents (aged 14-17 years old) with clinical depression, who were engaging in self-harm. All participants accessed CBT as part of clinical trial evaluating three psychological treatments for major depressive disorder in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Audio-taped CBT sessions were analyzed using discourse analysis. Within CBT sessions, adolescents drew upon stigma discourses in talking about their self-harm. Adolescent also described their self-harm scars as shameful and stigmatizing, and as "proof" of the legitimacy of their depression. It is important for CBT practitioners to understand the context of sociocultural discourses around self-harm behaviours and self-harm scars, which are reflected in how adolescents with depression describe these within therapy and may serve to maintain distress. The study indicates that awareness of use of language and intersecting sociocultural discourses can inform CBT practice.
