Background colour influences the growth performance and feed utilization of various fish species. In the current study, the effects of different aquarium backgrounds (transparent, white, black, red, green and blue) on growth performance, feed utilization, digestive enzyme activities, flesh quality, carcass composition and haematological parameters were investigated in Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer). The fish (16.17 ± 0.02 g initial body weight) were distributed into eighteen glass aquaria (6 treatments × 3 replications) with the various background colours and reared for 10 weeks. At the end of the experiment, positive growth performance and feed utilization were observed in fish reared against transparent, white, black or green backgrounds, while negative effects were noted for fish reared on the remaining treatments (p < .05). Modulation of the main digestive enzymes was observed across the six treatments, indicating different strategies for utilizing nutrients by the fish. The activity ratio of trypsin to chymotrypsin was highest in the fish reared against a black background, followed by a white background. Flesh quality, in terms of protein synthesis capacity and protein turnover rate, indicated a significant improvement in the fish reared against white, black and green backgrounds, while the contents of myosin and actin were similar across the six colour treatments. Carcass composition and haematological parameters showed no negative effects in either of the preferred treatments. These findings indicate that the most suitable background colours for rearing Asian seabass are black, followed by white and green, while transparent, red or blue backgrounds are unsuitable.

The proposed homemade egg-based diet (EBD) was studied to provide a suitable feed as an alternative for available instability of live diets and expensive commercial feeds for Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens). The EBD was compared with the widely used commercial feeds, Sakura and Betta Bio-Gold. The 1.5-month-old solid-red male fish were individually reared and fed with the three alternative diets (EBD, Sakura, and Betta Bio-Gold) at 5% of body weight twice daily (09.00 and 17.00 h) for eight weeks. At the end of the trial, growth performances were measured in terms of final body weight and weight gain. The results showed that fish fed with the EBD and the Betta Bio-Gold had similar growth performances (p > 0.05), but both were significantly higher than those fed with the Sakura (p < 0.05). Feeding rates, feed conversion ratios, and protein efficiency ratios of the EBD and the Betta Bio-Gold fish groups were also superior to the Sakura. This corresponded with significantly higher specific activities of the intestinal protein-digesting enzymes (trypsin and chymotrypsin) (p < 0.05). However, their stomach protein-digesting enzyme (pepsin) and the activity ratio of amylase to trypsin were significantly lower (p < 0.05). Specific activities of amylase and lipase were similar among the three dietary groups. Fish coloration was not influenced by the diet types, while improved muscle protein synthesis capacity and carcass lipid were observed in the EBD group. These findings indicate the EBD as an advantageous diet for male Siamese fighting fish.

Cannibalism is one of the factors contributing to the slow growth of lobsters. Cannibalism refers to the practice of one member of a species eating all or a portion of another member of the same species for nourishment. Cannibalism results in bodily deformities including missing fins and skin sores. Cannibalism is stimulated by the chemicals that are released from injured skin (amino acids). The level of cannibalism is said to be triggered by the container's mismatched color. This study set out to ascertain the behavior of lobster, including how frequently they molt and how much cannibalism occurs. A completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 repetitions was employed in this study. It is well known that one factor in cultivating operations to boost output is the color of the tank. Color of the backdrop water in natural ecosystems to identify feed. In comparison to other treatments, lobsters raised with color tended to molt more frequently (69.33±0.14%) (P <0.05). In comparison to the treatment, lobsters raised in transparent/control containers had a greater percentage of cannibalism (36.00±0.33%) (P< 0.05)
