Within the f i r s t 7 days of l i f e 5 sanples were collected f o r rotavirus detection (ELISA, electronmicroscopy and g e l electrophoresis i n 225 NBs; 5 samples were obtained I n 57 of the 225 NBs f o r enterqxithogenic bacteria (routine laboratoly technicps) ; and J sanples wre collected m 39 of the 225 to identify entercfarasites ( B u r r w ' s t e d u~i q u e ) . Nearly a l l sanples f r m the high SEL were oollected while th Nns =re s t i l l i n the maternity wards; i n the lo* SEL, sarrples obtairrd b e t w e n days 4 and 7 were collected a t hare.
