Body condition scoring (BCS) in corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus) and comparison to pre‐existing body condition index (BCI) for snakes

Abstract: In 2017, 0.8 million terraria were counted in German households, which are used to keep reptiles, amphibians or insects as pets or as feeder animals (IVH & ZZF, 2017). Veterinarians are increasingly confronted with these species as patients, especially reptiles. Next to the clinical examination, the assessment of the body condition is very important and widely used in numerous animals such as dogs

“…Additional ethical or regulatory (access in protected species) constraints such as the degree of invasiveness, the need for anesthesia, and sampling duration might further hinder the collection of biological data. Diagnostic imaging tools such as CT scans or magnetic resonance imaging are increasingly used as alternative methods to estimate the body composition of wildlife and companion animals (Barba et al, 2018 ; Clelland et al, 2018 ; De Persio et al, 2019 ; Eastick et al, 2021 ; Gimmel et al, 2020 ; Kim et al, 2018 ). CT is widely established in human and veterinary medicine and provides reliable results for adipose tissue mass estimation (Mattsson & Thomas, 2006 ; Zopfs et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The angle of the vent (shown in Figure 2) was calculated based on TL and the width of the tail at the level of the vent using the formula: arctan (TLWidth2 $\frac{\frac{\mathrm{TL}}{\mathrm{Width}}}{2}$). Body condition score was determined on a scale of 1–5 in accordance with previously published methods (Gimmel et al, 2021). Once all measurements had been collected, snakes were probed with a 1.4 mm well‐lubricated probe to confirm sex.…”

“…A UVB light 5.0 spectrum was provided. Body condition score was 4 of 5 [ 36 ] and minimal dehydration [ 37 ] (< 5%) was reported. No other alterations were evident at the physical examination.…”

“…The snake was hospitalized again, and a CBC and biochemistry were repeated. Biochemistry showed severe increase of AST, ALT and ALP despite the first measurement performed one month prior (Table 3 ) [ 36 ]. Hematology showed severe leucocytosis and moderate to severe anemia, despite the first measurement (Table 4 ) [ 37 ].…”
