“…The information from this locality fills an important gap in the knowledge of the geographical distribution of coastal megaclast deposits along the Atlantic coast of Europe. These deposits were reported previously from the British Isles [21,[27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][45][46][47][48][49][50][51], northern France (first of all, Brittany) [52][53][54][55][56], and the western and southwestern coasts of the Iberian Peninsula [57][58][59][60][61]. The Hondarribia locality represents the other domain, i.e., the Biscay Bay, the coasts of which are prone to severe storms creating and transporting megaclasts, similarly to the above-mentioned regions [62].…”

“…Irrespective of which of these aspects and particular opinions to follow, finding new localities coastal megaclast deposits is of utmost importance. The knowledge from the 'classical' localities like those studied in the Bahamas [6,7] and western Ireland [29][30][31][32][33][34][35] need extension and refinement with the information from many other localities of the world. Although megaclast studies are urgent and relatively cheap, the circle of the involved researchers remains too restricted to expect documentation of even a triple of all megaclast localities.…”

“…Strong coastal storms particularly affect the western/northwestern coasts of Ireland (Cooper et al, 2004;Backstrom et al, 2015). Historically, both its hard coasts (Scheffers et al, 2009(Scheffers et al, , 2010Erdmann et al, 2017) and sandy coasts (Cooper et al, 2004;Kandrot et al, 2016) are influenced by remnants of Atlantic Hurricanes reaching Ireland. Events such as the 1839 'Night of the big wind' (Shields and Fitzgerald, 1989) a Category 3 Hurricane and 1961's Hurricane Debbie (Hickey and Connolly-Johnston, 2012), demonstrate the potential impacts of receiving these events.…”

“…The Northern and Western coasts of Ireland are classified as high-energy coastlines and are often affected by energetic storms and the tail-end of a small number of Atlantic Hurricanes [32,33,[55][56][57]. The effects of some of these events have been described by different authors [32,[55][56][57][58][59][60], but the specific impacts of a recent post-tropical cyclone on Northern Irish beaches have not been investigated so far.…”
