Bovine Serum Albumin Detection by Graphene Oxide Coated Long-Period Fiber Grating

Abstract: A biosensor for bovine serum albumin (BSA) detection by graphene oxide (GO) functionalized micro-taped long-period fiber grating (GMLPG) was demonstrated. The amide bond connected between the GO and BSA enabled the BSA to attach onto the fiber surface, which changed the effective refractive index of the cladding mode and characterized the concentration of the BSA. This real-time monitoring system demonstrated a sensing sensitivity of 1.263 nm/(mg/mL) and a detection limit of 0.043 mg/mL. Moreover, it illustrat… Show more

“…Graphene and its derivatives, as a two-dimensional material to be exfoliated, has been widely researched in the LPFGs sensing applications owing to its superior optical and optoelectronic properties [28][29][30]. In our trial, the humidity sensing capability of side-polished LPFG is achieved by applying a GO nano-film material coating [31].…”

“…Compared with the FBG, the LPFG exhibits a forward-propagation cladding mode [124]. The resonance wavelength drift of the LPFG is caused by changes in the surface RI resulting from variations in the gas concentration.…”

“…The LOD of 0.02 mg/mL in various interfering compounds was obtained. More recently, the same group developed a biosensor with the same structure for bovine serum albumin (BSA) detection [ 87 ]. The sensing mechanism relies on measuring the wavelength shift caused by the covalent bonding between the GO and BSA.…”
