Boxing headguard performance in punch machine tests

Abstract: Background The paper presents a novel laboratory method for assessing boxing headguard impact performance. The method is applied to examine the effects of headguards on head impact dynamics and injury risk. Methods A linear impactor was developed, and a range of impacts was delivered to an instrumented Hybrid III head and neck system both with and without an AIBA (Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur)-approved headguard. Impacts at selected speeds between 4.1 and 8.3 m/s were undertaken. The impactor mas… Show more

“…Substantial research efforts have been expended to investigate the protective ability of various padded sports headgears, and the results of these studies have shown that certain padded headgears are capable of attenuating head impacts (Broglio et al, 2003;Naunheim et al, 2003a;McIntosh and Patton, 2015). To the authors' knowledge, this is the first investigation to quantify the protective capabilities of protective water polo headgears.…”

“…In a recent analysis, the impact of punches was systematically examined both with and without AIBA-approved headgear. A significant reduction in impact was observed with headgear, and it was concluded that the use of headgear can “play an important role in reducing the risk of concussion” [ 10 ]. Related studies have produced similar results for the reduction of both linear [ 11 ] and rotational impact [ 12 ] through the use of boxing headgear.…”

“…6 Although studies focused on boxing are scarce, the concern with sports performance points in the direction that performance can be affected by intervening factors, among them psychosocial aspects. [7][8][9] Studies have shown that anxiety interferes with the results: the psychic condition is related to the sporting performance. 10,11 Anxiety is characterized by two aspects: cognitive anxiety (CA) is characterized by excessive preoccupation with performance, apprehension and negativism; and somatic anxiety (SA) has as its main characteristic transient changes in physiological activation, such as an increase in heart rate, respiratory changes, excessive sweating, tremors, increased blood pressure, muscle tension, among others, that are subdivided into anxiety-state (AS) and anxiety-trait (AT).…”
