“…This finding contrasts with some other studies also aimed at prognosticating the outcome of patients suffering from brain metastases (Zimm et al, 1981;Swift et al, 1993;Nussbaum et al, 1996;Sen et al, 1998). However, one can mention that these determinants vary from one study to another (Zimm et al, 1981;Swift et al, 1993;Ando et al, 1996;Nussbaum et al, 1996;Hsiung et al, 1998;Nguyen et al, 1998;Sen et al, 1998). This discrepancy could be in relationship with a possible underestimation of the number of metastases and the tumour burden shown by means of CT scan.…”

“…Management of BMUP patients usually requires early treatment of the brain tumor, followed by periodic reevaluation for a primary tumor (3). Several reports have described the clinical outcome in these patients, but the authors derived conflicting conclusions from the results (1,16,17). Treatments of brain metastases are classified as supportive (corticosteroids, anticonvulsants, antibiotics, anticoagulants, antidepressants) and definitive (surgery, WBRT, SRS alone or in combination with WBRT, and systemic or local chemotherapy).…”

“…The propensity of lung cancers to produce early brain and other organ metastasis has been demonstrated by other authors, although the frequency of lung primaries was somewhat higher in our series than some other reports. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Early systemic metastasis likely reflects a unique aspect of lung cancer, such as its relative proximity to the systemic arterial circulation. In the diagnostic evaluation of patients with a newly detected brain mass, the high frequency of the lung as the primary site of cancer would indicate that imaging of the chest should be a major focus in the search for a systemic malignancy.…”
