Brain metastasis model in athymic nude mice using a novel MUC1-secreting human breast-cancer cell line, MA11

Abstract: Breast cancer is one of the most common sources of brain metastases. After clinical detection of such tumour spread, median survival is usually only a few months, with brain metastases being the major cause of death (Boogerd et af., 1993). Between 20 and 30% of breast-cancer patients have metastatic brain lesions at time of death (Lee, 1985). Moreover, the established modes of treatment for brain metastases give 1-year survival rates of less than 20%. Clearly there is a need to further our understanding of the… Show more

“…Human BCC lines MDA MB 231 (further referred to as MDA231), MDA MB 468 (further referred to as MDA468), SKBR3, and MCF7 were obtained from American Type Culture Collection, while MA11 was established at the Norwegian Radium Hospital (Norway) (Rye et al ., 1996). The cells were cultured in RPMI‐1640 medium (MDA468 cultured in DMEM) (Sigma, St. Louis, MO, USA) supplemented with 10% FBS (PAA, Pasching, Austria) and 2 m m GlutaMAX (Gibco, Paisley, UK).…”

“…The uveal melanoma cell line 92.1 was generously provided by Martine Jager (Leiden University Medical Centre, The Netherlands; [34]). The breast carcinoma cell line MA11 was established from bone marrow aspirate from a patient with lobular carcinoma [35], and the melanoma cell line WM239 was obtained from Meenhard Herlyn (The Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, PA, USA). A375 and SK-MEL-28 (both from malignant melanoma), DU145 (prostate carcinoma), HCT-116 (colorectal carcinoma), MCF7 (breast carcinoma) and MCF10A (non-tumorigenic mammary epithelial) were obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC, Rockville, MD, USA), and the human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) were purchased from ScienceCell Research Labs (San Diego, CA, USA).…”
