Brazing ZrB2-SiC ceramics to Ti6Al4V alloy with TiCu-based amorphous filler

Abstract: In this work, the Ti-6Al-4V alloy and ZrB 2 -SiC ultra-high temperature ceramic joint was brazed by TiCuZrNi amorphous filler at 910℃ with varied holding time. The element diffusion, microstructure and precipitation phase of the joints were analyzed in details. Reaction products in the joints were identified as β-Ti, (Ti,Zr) 2 (Cu,Ni), TiCu, Ti 2 Cu, TiC, Ti 5 Si 3 , TiB and TiB 2. The formation schemes of reaction products were investigated. The holding time has substantial impacts on interfacial microstructu… Show more

“…Such identification of Ti 2 (Cu,Ni) was also obtained by Qin and Feng in brazing CFC/TC4 using Cu and Mo interlayers . The EDS result of microzone W indicates that the light‐gray area in the filler layer corresponds to Ti(Cu,Ni), which is in agreement with the result obtained by Liu et al…”

“…The thickness of the foil was about 30 µm. The solidus and liquidus temperature of the foil were 1103 K and 1143 K, respectively [27]. The amorphous structure of the brazing foil was examined by an X-ray diffraction (XRD, D8, Bruker, Germany) using Cu Kα radiation.…”

“…TiB whisker formation has an effective influence on the strengthening of the joints. Other authors [39] achieved better results on the brazing of Ti6Al4V to ZrB2-SiC ceramic using TiCu-based amorphous filler. The brazing temperature used was 910 °C , with a dwell time ranging from 10 to 50 min under 1.4 kPa of contact pressure.…”

“…However, the joining of this ceramic to metallic parts is essential for Figure 14. Schematic of the formation of each reaction layer during the brazing process: (a-c) show the interaction between filler and base metal; (d) the filler begins to melt; (e) the molten brazing alloy wetted the surface of base metals; (f) the formation of Ti 5 Si 3 and TiC; (g) the formation of TiB and TiB 2 ; (h) the formation of Ti 2 Cu and TiCu; (i) the formation of (Ti,Zr) 2 (Cu,Ni) and β-Ti during the cooling process, reproduced from Reference [39] with permission of Elsevier, 2017.…”
