This paper reports on an experimental study of the contact resistance of Hall bars in the Quantum Hall Effect regime while increasing the current through the sample. These measurements involve also the longitudinal resistance and they have been always performed before the breakdown of the Quantum Hall Effect. Our investigations are restricted to the i = 2 plateau which is used in all metrological measurements of the von Klitzing constant R K . A particular care has been taken concerning the configuration of the measurement. Four configurations were used for each Hall bar by reversing the current and the magnetic field polarities. Several samples with different width have been studied and we observed that the critical current for the contact resistance increases with the width of the Hall bar as previously observed for the critical current of the longitudinal resistance. The critical currents exhibit either a linear or a sublinear increase. All our observations are interpreted in the current understanding of the Quantum hall effect brekdown. Our analysis suggests that a heated region appears at the current contact, develops and then extends in the whole sample while increasing the current. Consequently, we propose to use the contact resistance as an electronic thermometer for the Hall fluid.

In the higher Landau levels (N>0) a reentrant integer quantum Hall effect (RIQHE) state, which resides at fractional filling factors but exhibiting integer Hall plateaus, has been previously observed and studied extensively. The nonlinear dynamics of RIQHE were measured by microwave resonance, with the results consistent with an electronic bubble phase pinned by impurities. We have carried out Introduction In condensed matter systems nonlinear dynamics are commonly associated with a class of translational-symmetry-broken phases, often termed electronic crystals. Archetypical examples include Wigner crystals (WC), striped phase in high T c superconductors, charge order in organic materials, and charged colloidal crystals. Among these, nonlinear transport of the charge density wave (CDW) has been studied extensively [1,2], where CDW is pinned by impurities in a small bias regime. Its dynamics can be revealed by dramatic transport behaviors, such as threshold electric field (E T ) and conductance steps resulting from the de-pinning transition in an increasing bias. In the quantum Hall system which is realized in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) under an intensive magnetic field, the WC, striped, and bubble phases have been observed [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. In order to understand the nonlinear dynamics of these phases, it is of great interest to directly measure their critical transport parameters, such as thresholds for the de-pinning. However, such information is often obscured by off-diagonal component of the conductance tensor under magnetic fields.

We report an unusual breakdown of the magnetically induced Wigner solid in an exceptional two-dimensional electron gas. The current-voltage characteristic is found to be hysteretic in the voltage biased setup and has a region of negative differential resistance in the current biased setup. When the sample is current biased in the region of negative differential resistance, the voltage on and the current through the sample develop spontaneous narrow band oscillations.
