Breast disease: dynamic spiral MR imaging.

Abstract: Dynamic spiral breast MR imaging proved an excellent method with which to collect contrast enhancement data rapidly enough that accurate comparisons can be made between many analytic methods.

“…1B) is that often reported as characteristic of such tumors: much faster and greater uptake (followed by washout) compared with a benign lesion such as that of Fig. 1D (13,(20)(21)(22)(23). The mean arterial input function (AIF), determined from axillary artery 1 H 2 O signal time courses in 3 patients, shows the plasma CR concentration, [CR p ], peaking near 5 mM at Ϸ0.75 min (Fig.…”

“…In general, focally enhancing lesions that measured Ն 5 mm prompted follow-up MRI, initially at 6 months, to ensure stability. Dominant lesions that measured Ն 5 mm with either suspicious morphologic features (e.g., rim enhancement, spiculation, linear-branching enhancement 34 ) or suspicious dynamic enhancement features (e.g., rapid, intense, initial enhancement followed by an abrupt transition to a stable plateau signal intensity or an abrupt transition to a decreasing wash-out signal intensity 35 ) were biopsied. The radiologist (B.L.D.)…”

“…Breast cancer screening has been a major thrust for DCE-MRI (19)(20)(21)(22), particularly because of the angiogenic nature of the tumors (20,23). At least because of its greater sensitivity compared with other modalities, the recent advocacy for increased MRI breast screening favors DCE-MRI (2, 3).…”
