Breeding Aspect for Improvement in Chrysanthemum: A Review

Abstract: Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.) belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is one of the most versatile, economically important and internationally recognized floriculture crop. Chrysanthemum has a long history of cultivation; it was first cultivated in China as a herb in approximately the 15 th century BC and was then successively introduced to Japan, Europe, and the United States (Andorson, 2006). Maximum diversity of chrysanthemum is scattered in eastern parts of the world hence also recognized as… Show more

“…Thus, the production and commercialization of chrysanthemum have been greatly restricted 3 , 4 . Drought stress has become one of the main factors limiting chrysanthemum production and landscaping applications, largely due to global water shortages 5 , 6 . Development of new chrysanthemum cultivars with increased drought stress tolerance is therefore a key goal of chrysanthemum breeders 7 .…”

“…Crossbreeding, along with sexual and asexual reproduction occurs naturally. Although this technique has been used as the foundation for numerous cultivars that have long since been used, Chrysanthemum is a self-incompatible cross-pollinated plant with difficulty matching parents and genetic factors are complicated for the selection of superior hybrid progenies (Anderson et al, 2017;Zhang et al, 2018;Kumari et al, 2019;Baghele, 2021).…”

“…Contrary to mutation breeding, which produces new, innovative traits quickly, conventional breeding requires more time and work. New types of chrysanthemums are being created for farmers to purchase commercially (Baghele, 2021).…”
