Bridging the Gaps Between Patients and Primary Care in China: A Nationwide Representative Survey

Abstract: PURPOSE China introduced a national policy of developing primary care in 2009, establishing 8,669 community health centers (CHCs) by 2014 that employed more than 300,000 staff. These facilities have been underused, however, because of public mistrust of physicians and overreliance on specialist care. “…The provider survey instrument was developed by the study investigators and consisted of two questionnaires—one for the clinicians-in-charge of the CHC who was asked to provide organisational and service details of the CHC as well as patient characteristics, and another for all primary care practitioners (PCPs) (nurses and doctors) responsible for direct patient contact in the selected CHCs. The questionnaire and findings of the full survey are published elsewhere 15. This paper focuses on reporting the findings related to STI provision in CHCs in China.…”

“…However, the relationship of reduced child mortality in our study was consistent with studies finding that the technical skills of PCPs still lag behind that of hospital physicians during the transformation of the hospital-oriented healthcare system in China. Also, hospitals have better equipment and better capability to handle emergencies [2,[40][41][42]. Thus, hospital-based specialty care may be associated with reduced mortality.…”

“…In a study with a sophisticated sampling strategy and a high response rate, Wong and colleagues find challenges in patient acceptance and in the comprehensiveness of care provided. 15 In dueling point / counterpoint articles, Hahn argues that quality measurement has made him a worse physician, 16 while Scrase contends that quality measurement and reporting have the potential to improve patient outcomes.…”
