Brief communication: Grease Ice in the Antarctic Marginal Ice Zone

Abstract: Abstract. Frazil ice, consisting of loose disc-shaped ice crystals, is the very first ice that forms in the annual cycle in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) of the Antarctic. A sufficient number of frazil ice crystals forms the surface grease ice layer taking a fundamental role in the freezing processes in the MIZ. As soon as the ocean waves are sufficiently damped, a closed ice cover can form. In this brief communication we investigate the rheological properties of frazil ice, which has a crucial influence on the … Show more

“…Given the unknowns in wave-ice interaction and the large uncertainties in both observed and forecasted waves within sea ice, the MIZ can be operationally defined through sea ice concentration thresholds, as the transition zone between open water and consolidated pack ice, where the total area of ocean is covered by 15-80% sea ice (e.g. Paul et al 2021;Vichi 2021).…”

“…During the pancake ice floe lifting, the 3D printed Niskin bottle was again deployed from the helideck to retrieve water samples from which the ice-ocean boundary layer salinity was determined. In addition, interstitial frazil ice was collected and its viscosity was measured, further details are found in Paul et al (2021).…”
