Broccoli Regulates Protein Alterations and Cataractogenesis in Selenite Models

Abstract: FFB prevents selenite-induced cataractogenesis in albino rat pups, possibly by maintaining antioxidant status and ionic balance through Ca(2+) ATPase pump, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, calpain activation, and protein insolubilization, which have been reported in this article for the first time.

“…A number of studies suggest that medicinal plants having antioxidant potential could protect the system against the toxic effects of ROS [8,9]. There is substantial evidence that oxidative stress is partly responsible for selenite cataract, and antioxidant could be the effective inhibitors of cataractogenesis in this model.…”

“…Rats used for the study were obtained from the animal house stock of the host department, and handled in accordance with the guidelines as per the host's "Institutional Animal Ethical Committee" and Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) rules [Sanction No: IAEC-KU-15/05-06-BC-AA (9)]. Lenses were organ cultured in DMEM medium with HEPES buffer, supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS), 100 U/ml penicillin, 0.1 mg/ml streptomycin, and 0.25 μg/ml amphotericin under 5% CO 2 at 37°C in a CO 2 incubator.…”
