Bubble streams in Titan’s seas as a product of liquid N2 + CH4 + C2H6 cryogenic mixture

Abstract: Titan, Saturn's largest moon, is the only extraterrestrial body known to support stable liquid on its surface, in the form of seas and lakes that dot the polar regions. Many indications suggest that the liquid should be composed of a mixture of N 2 , CH 4 and C 2 H 6 . Recent RADAR observations of Titan's large sea, called "Ligeia Mare", have shown unexplained and ephemeral bright features, possibly due to rising bubbles. Here we report that our numerical model, when combined with experimental data found in th… Show more

“…Therefore, lakebed seepage may in reality change the lake composition in these two maria by preferential seepage of methane and ethane. This effect is unlikely to be relevant in Ontario Lacus since its maximum depth of 50 m (Mastrogiuseppe, Hayes, et al, ) or 90 m (Hayes, ) is too shallow for the occurrence of phase splitting (Cordier et al, ). In all lakes S is a much larger sink than E and also exceeds the sum of the other three terms, so the annual methane budget is everywhere negative (Table ).…”

“…have argued that these features could not be image artifacts or permanent geophysical structures but are consistent with ephemeral phenomena such as suspended solids, bubbles, waves and tides on Titan [10]. Using a numerical model [11] and existing solubility data of nitrogen in methane and ethane [12,13], Cordier et. al.…”

“…Ethane C 2 H 6 is a molecule of interest in many scientific fields and applications including atmospheric studies, astrophysics, breath analysis, thermometry, oil prospection, and industrial production of ethylene by steam cracking. Ethane is one of the most abundant molecules in natural gas, after methane.…”

“…It is considered as a pollutant, a greenhouse gas, and plays an important role in the chemical reactions occurring in the Earth's atmosphere . It is also present in the atmosphere of giant planets and probably at the surface of Saturn's moon Titan . From a more fundamental point of view, ethane is a prototype for molecules having an internal torsional motion .…”
