Seasonal variations in lake levels of Titan's hydrocarbon seas/lakes are predicted by an ocean circulation model in an effort to understand the observed temporal changes in lake size or lack thereof. Three different ground permeabilities are assumed so as to change the relative importance of precipitation, evaporation, river runoff, and groundwater seepage for the lake methane budget. The lake level generally rises in the rainy season around the summer solstice and falls or stagnates during long dry periods in autumn and winter. The annual lake level range in the northern hemisphere amounts to 50–120 cm depending on geographic location and size of the lakes and ground permeability. If the hydraulic connection between Punga Mare and Kraken Mare is weak, the lake level range of Punga Mare amplifies at the expense of other seas and also establishes a large lake level difference between these two seas, which is not compatible with the observation by the Cassini spacecraft. On‐lake precipitation would cause the lake level of Ontario Lacus to vary seasonally by merely 15 cm, yet river runoff from the huge catchment area can increase the annual lake level range to several meters. The shrinkage of Ontario Lacus observed by Cassini is more likely to be caused by lakebed seepage than by evaporation. The ultimate cause of the difference in the seasonal behavior between northern and southern lakes may be the hemispheric asymmetry in precipitation, be it caused astronomically or topographically.

We have studied the temperature dependence of the solubility of nitrogen in methane, ethane, and mixtures of methane and ethane using vapor-liquid equilibrium simulations of binary and ternary mixtures of nitrogen, methane and ethane for a range of temperatures between 90K and 110K at a pressure of 1.5 atm, thermodynamic conditions that may exist on the Saturn's giant moon, Titan. We find that -(i) the solubility of nitrogen in both methane and ethane decreases with increasing temperature; (ii) the solubility of nitrogen in methane is much larger compared to that in ethane at low temperatures, (iii) solubility of nitrogen in a ternary mixture of methane, ethane, and nitrogen increases upon increasing mole-fraction of methane. Our results are in quantitative agreement with the recent experimental measurement of the solubility of nitrogen in methane, ethane, and a mixture of methane and ethane. Furthermore, we find a strong temperature-dependent surface adsorption of nitrogen at the nitrogen-hydrocarbon interface, previously unknown. We have also investigated surface tension of the gas-liquid interface and find that it decreases upon decreasing temperature. Moreover, we find that the interfacial layer of adsorbed nitrogen and ethane show a preferential orientational ordering at the interface.

The pure rotational Raman linewidths of the symmetric‐top molecule C2H6 are determined from a time‐resolved femtosecond experiment at room temperature and moderate pressure in a pump‐probe scheme. After excitation by a strong 100 fs‐duration nonresonant near infrared pump pulse, the molecular sample exhibits periodic post‐pulse alignment revivals that produce an anisotropic angular distribution of the molecular axis. Such molecular motion induces in turn a time‐dependent optical birefringence, which can be probed using a weak time‐delayed probe pulse. The Fourier transform of the temporal signal, recorded over a wide time delay range (several hundred picoseconds) for high frequency resolution, is directly related to the rotational Raman spectrum of ethane molecules. The Raman lines are analyzed with a frequency lineshape taking into account the collisional relaxation and the apparatus function. The linewidths are measured for rotational quantum numbers J=3 to J=30 in the pressure range 0.69–1.06 bar. A decrease of the collisional broadening coefficient is observed as J increases. These first measurements of pure rotational Raman linewidths of ethane are compared with previously reported infrared and far‐infrared values.
