Buccal alveolar bone changes following rapid maxillary expansion and fixed appliance therapy

Abstract: Objectives To assess factors that may be associated with buccal bone changes adjacent to maxillary first molars after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and fixed appliance therapy. Materials and Methods Pretreatment (T1) and posttreatment (T2) cone-beam computed tomography scans were obtained from 45 patients treated with RME and preadjusted edgewise appliances. Buccal alveolar bone thickness was measured adjacent to the mesiob… Show more

“…Additionally, this study's degree of rotation differed from Ciambotti et al 41 sample, which included bonded and banded rapid palatal expansion appliances of a different design. Contrasting Montaroli et al 42 With a NiTi palatal expander, the molar rotation was 26.61° as opposed to 1.58° with an RPE, and the intermolar width was 4.76 mm as opposed to 6.26 mm. In line with other investigations, palatal inclination of the maxillary incisors was seen in both groups in the current study, this as in accordance with previous studies.…”

“…Regarding non-cleft patient, significant reductions in the width of the buccal alveolar bone and a rise in anatomic abnormalities next to the expander anchor teeth have been linked to RME treatment. Anatomical abnormalities of the buccal bone that arise after treatment are less common in anchor teeth whose original buccal bone thickness was larger (21) . However, a previous study (22) displayed that after RME, the thickness of the buccal bone did not alter as the changes were not significant at (P >.05).…”

“…In previous studies, many scholars have proposed that orthodontic treatment increases the incidence of bone defects, accompanied by gingival recession and periodontal attachment loss. 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 Once the root is exposed out of the alveolar bone, intact cortical plates are difficult to naturally remodel. 29 Nevertheless, there are very few previous results on the change in fenestration and dehiscence in skeletal Class III patients after POT, which is one of the main topics of this study.…”
