Bufei Jianpi granules improve skeletal muscle and mitochondrial dysfunction in rats with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Abstract: BackgroundBufei Jianpi granules has been confirmed effective in improving pulmonary function, alleviating acute exacerbations, improving six-minute walk distance and quality of life, and benefited in 12-month follow-up in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with syndrome of lung-spleen qi deficiency. Skeletal muscle dysfunction (SMD), an important extrapulmonary complication, occurs in the very initiation of COPD and is closely related to morbidity and mortality. To evaluate the efficacy of B… Show more

“…There are many animal models in which muscle loss is observed as a result of the disease development. There are numerous cancer cachexia animal model as cancer itself, [41][42][43][44][45] for the other chronic diseases, the literature shows animal model of sepsis, 46 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 47 chronic renal failure, 48 and chronic heart failure. 46,[49][50][51][52] However, these animal models are inadequate to be used as a rheumatoid cachexia animal model.…”

“…Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common and frequently occurring respiratory disease, which is characterized by persistent airflow limitation [1]. It is often complicated with exacerbations and hospitalizations [2], which increased mortality and reduced life-expectancy [3].…”

“…16,17) Klebsiella pneumoniae, which is one of top three pathogens causing COPD deterioration 18) and has been used to prepare animal models of COPD at the stable stage and the acute exacerbation stage. 19,20) In this study, we used rat model of COPD and AECOPD that induces significantly lower pulmonary function, especially in acute inflammatory reactions, 19,[21][22][23][24][25][26][27] to explore dynamic inflammatory features during and after an acute bacterial challenge with Klebsiella pneumoniae in a COPD rat model. The rats were challenged with an additional exacerbation at a different time-point to determine variations in the temporal course of AE and the subsequent RW.…”
