Burden of acute gastroenteritis and healthcare-seeking behaviour in France: a population-based study

Abstract: In France surveillance underestimates the true burden of acute gastroenteritis (AG). We conducted a population-based, retrospective cross-sectional telephone survey between May 2009 and April 2010 in order to obtain more accurate estimates of the incidence and the burden of AG and to describe healthcare-seeking behaviour for AG. Of the 10 080 persons included in the survey, 260 respondents reported 263 episodes of AG. The incidence rate of AG was estimated at 0·33 cases/person-year (95% CI 0·28-0·37). It was h… Show more

“…The data on AD incidences vary from country to country because of differences in case definition, surveillance systems, and/or the period of study. In France, a telephone survey estimated the incidence rate of acute gastroenteritis at 0.33 cases/person-year [14]. In the Netherlands, a population-based study conducted in 1998/1999 estimated that the gastroenteritis incidence was 283 per 1,000 person-years [15].…”

“…Healthcare-seeking behavior for acute gastroenteritis (AG) in France was assessed in a population-based survey carried out in 2009-2010 and identified duration of illness as the most important factor associated with consultation (Van Cauteren et al, 2012). Therefore, we estimated specific proportions of laboratory-confirmed campylobacteriosis or salmonellosis cases who had short (1-2 days), medium (3-5 days) and long (more than 5 days) duration of illness.…”

“…The number of cases that consulted is estimated at 327,026 (90%CrI 210,964-477,187) for campylobacteriosis and 100,190 (90%CrI 77,120-140,627) for salmonellosis. Yearly, an estimated 7 million persons consult for AG (Van Cauteren et al, 2012). Therefore, the prevalence of both infections among AG cases consulting a physician can be estimated at 1 per 21 and 1 per 70, respectively.…”

“…We were only able to trace down 20 stool samples and four were sent to the NRL of enteric viruses, despite many calls and emails from ARS PACA. Studies in French general population [14] and in general practitioners [15] also indicate that few stool samples are requested. The study indicates that stool samples are requested five times more often in patients with bloody diarrhoea or with a long duration of illness before consultation.…”
