Bursae around the knee joints

Abstract: A bursa is a fluid-filled structure that is present between the skin and tendon or tendon and bone. The main function of a bursa is to reduce friction between adjacent moving structures. Bursae around the knee can be classified as those around the patella and those that occur elsewhere. In this pictorial essay we describe the most commonly encountered lesions and their MRI appearance.

“…Numerous bursae can be encountered around the knee joint and their primary action is to reduce friction between adjacent moving structures, such as tendons, ligaments and bone surfaces [69, 35, 36]. From a histological point of view they are synovium-lined structures and are usually collapsed but may often contain a small amount of synovial fluid.…”

“…From a histological point of view they are synovium-lined structures and are usually collapsed but may often contain a small amount of synovial fluid. Typically are not visible on MRI, unless they are inflamed from various causes (hence the term bursitis) [69, 35, 36]. In the following classification, an anatomical location-based scheme (anterior-medial-lateral-posterior) is used for descriptional purposes:…”

“…Generally, it is difficult to diagnose pes anserine bursitis by physical examination. Use of common diagnostic modalities such as plain X-ray, MRI, and electromyography for the diagnosis of pes anserine bursitis is time-consuming, and injection into the bursa without image guidance is associated with considerable complications [4,5]. In recent years, the ultrasound technique has played a crucial role in increasing the accuracy and efficacy of neuraxial and peripheral nerve blockade as well as joint injection by both decreasing the rate of complications and improving our anatomic knowledge [6-8].…”

“…Fluid-fi lled structures between the skin and tendon or tendon and bone are defi ned as bursae, which play an essential role in reducing friction between adjacent moving structures (1) . Only large joints such as the shoulder, knee, hip, and elbow have bursae around them.…”
