Business model design–performance relationship under external and internal contingencies: Evidence from SMEs in an emerging economy

Abstract: We examined Business Model (BM) designs-performance relationship and the moderating effects of firm age and external environment on this relationship. Furthermore, we investigated the impact of simultaneously operating dual BM designs (i.e. novelty and efficiency) on firm performance and contingent effect of firm age on this relationship. Based on data from 241 Indian SMEs, our findings highlighted that BM novelty was of greater benefit to younger SMEs compared to mature SMEs, while BM efficiency was of greate… Show more

“…To measure the level of BMI construct, items considering the novelty of BMI were adopted from Osterwalder et al [8] and Zott and Amit [22]; Ross et al [79] items were used to measure the BMI outcomes construct. For the business performance construct, items were adapted from previous studies [83,86,92,93]. The constructs and respective measurement items are presented in Table 1.…”

“…These players could be other inventors with expertise in complementary fields, technical staff and managers. Inventors must carefully analyze others for potential collaborations in R&D work to be able to understand what patterns of resource reuse, reconstruction, and recombination are possible and will most likely produce fruitful results in conditions of uncertainty and resource constraints [10,31,53,86]. During these processes of collaborating with other inventors and colleagues, it is essential for inventors to access information, skillsets, time, and resources possessed by others.…”

“…In addition, as a formal institutional arrangement within a corporation, internal governance has a potential substitution effect on informal regulation within the corporation, and effective internal governance can significantly improve enterprise performance [42]. On the other hand, different elements of business models will also have an impact on corporate performance [43,44]; the quality of business model design even directly determines the quality of performance [43][44][45].…”
