Business Model Research: From Concepts to Theories

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, it provides business model researchers with a structured analysis of the research that is required to enable business model theories to be developed. A schema for analyzing existing research and for discerning the research required to move towards business model theory building is proposed. The importance of conceptual research along with deductive and inductive empirical research is emphasized. Secondly, the extant business model literature is analyzed accordin… Show more

“…This notion is aligned with previous studies that demand empirical investigation of mechanisms whereby transformational leaders advance innovative results. (Cheng et al, 2014;Jansen et al, 2009;Kortmann et al, 2014) This research utilized a pure deductive empirical approach to investigate the relationship between DBMI and their key antecedents (Lambert & Montemari, 2017) for established B2C and B2B2C firms in Indonesia. The research problem addresses a key question of whether the role of TL is impacting DBMI, either directly or indirectly through organizational readiness for digital innovation (ORDI) and ITeDC.…”

“…We divided the sample to have an initial empirical set of objects for design and, at least, a second group to validate the findings against more objects 3 Empirical-to-Conceptual 15 Another empirical-to-conceptual iteration is necessary to test the finding from the 2 nd iteration and refine dimensions and characteristics broad look, at the concept itself. Of course, choosing either path has implications for the degree of generalizability, i.e., either on an industry level or a general, conceptual level (Lambert & Montemari, 2017). However, as both avenues seem reasonable, a dimension for business model taxonomy design should reflect whether it is supposed to be industryindependent or tailored to a particular industry.…”

“…Research on business models and business model innovation is in its infancy and bereft of mid-range theory. To move from business model concepts to theories, researchers should investigate the systematic business model design and business model implementation (Lambert and Montemari, 2017;Souchkov, 2010).…”
