Bypass laparoscopic procedure for palliation of esophageal cancer

Abstract: Esophageal cancer is a devastating disease with rapidly increasing incidence in Western countries. Dysphagia is the most common complication, causing severe malnutrition and reduced quality of life. A 69-year-old male with persistent esophageal cancer after radiation therapy was subjected to palliative by-pass surgery using a laparoscopic approach. “…Esophageal cancer (EC) is a common gastrointestinal cancer, ranking as the sixth leading cause of cancerinduced deaths worldwide and the fourth in China (1,2). A key contributory factor in the high mortality of EC relates to the diagnosis of EC at an advanced stage with significant comorbidities (3). Lifestyles play a distinct role in the occurrence of the disease, with reports highlighting factors such as alcohol consumption, smoking, and genetic variants leading to an increased risk of EC (4,5).…”

“…There are no established criteria to appropriately determine whether curative resection can be performed after induction therapy in patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer. Our group previously reported that the preoperative SUVmax determined by 18F-FDG-PET (cut-off <4.7) was useful for predicting R0 resection after induction therapy for initially unresectable locally advanced esophageal cancer [22]. In the present study, the preoperative…”
