In continuation of the previous review on reductions by metal alkoxyaluminum hydrides, this chapter is devoted to reductions of carboxylic acids and their derivatives, open‐chain and heterocyclic nitrogen compounds, and open‐chain and heterocyclic sulfur compounds by alkoxyaluminum hydrides, metal alkoxyaluminum hydrides, and chiral metal alkoxyaluminohydride complexes. Emphasis is placed on the scope, limitations, and the synthetic utility of metal alkoxyaluminum hydrides. Accepted views on reaction mechanisms are mentioned briefly. Discussion of alternative methods of reduction, particularly those using other metal hydrides or complex metal hydrides, is limited to examples of the most important transformations of functional groups; reducing properties of these hydrides and hydride reagents such as borane–dimethyl sulfide, amine boranes, haloboranes, organoboranes, sodium borohydride–pyridine, sodium borohydride–triphenyl borate, sodium borohydride—transition‐metal complexes, potassium triisopropoxyborohydride, and sodium triacyloxyborohydrides have been reported in several papers and reviews. Monographs and reviews summarize reductions with metal alkoxyaluminum hydrides and asymmetric reductions with chiral lithium alkoxyaluminum hydrides and chiral boron reagents.

Synthesewege zum 17α‐Hydroxy‐16‐methylen‐19‐nor‐progesteron und seinen Derivaten

Verschiedene Synthesewege zum 17a-Hydroxy-16-methylen-19-nor-progesteron (4a) und seinen Derivaten werden beschrieben. Die C-19-Funktionalisierung wird in jedem Falle uber eine Barton-Reaktion durchgefuhrt. Zum Teil bisher nicht beschriebene Nebenprodukte dieser Reaktion und der Folgereaktionen werden isoliert und aufgeklart. Sie gestatten einen genaueren Einblick in die Reaktionsablaufe.Unsere bisherigen Untersuchungen iiber 16-Methylen-steroide 1) wurden fortgesetzt mit dem Ziel, die physiologisch aktive 16-Methylengruppe mit der 19-Nor-Gnippierung in einer Molekel zu kombinierenz). Es erschien von groRem Interesse zu untersuchen, ob die Verkniipfung dieser beiden Strukturmerkmale neue hormonelle Wirkungen und Wirkungsdifferenzierungen mit sich bringen wiirde 1.3).Von der chemischen Seite stellte sich zunachst das Problem, geeignete und wieder leicht abspaltbare Schutzgruppierungen fiir die 17a-Hydroxy-16-methylen-Anordnung zu finden, die unter den Bedingungen der C-19-Funktionalisierung und Eliminierung4) stabil sind. Wir konnten feststellen, dafi dies bei Anwendung der Barton-Reaktions) sowohl durch geeignete Umwandlung der 17a-Hydroxy-16-methylen-Gruppierung als auch durch Abschirmung von C-17 aus erreicht werden kann. Dabei Iauft die Nitritphotolyse selbst unter sehr schonenden Reaktionsbedinguiigen ab. Die Schutzgruppen sind in erster Lime zur Darstellung der Ausgangsverbindungen der Photolyse und deren Folgereaktionen notwendig.Gemeinsames Ausgangsprodukt war das 3~-Acetoxy-16-methyl-A~J~-pregnadienon-(20)6), das sich nach bekannten Verfahren 1,7) in das 17a-Hydroxy-3P-acetoxy-I 6methylen-As-pregnenon-(20) (1 a) iiberfiihren 1aRt.
