Contemporary research work in the field of Wireless Ad-hoc Networks (WANETs) are focused on most important issue of performance, minimize the congestion in the network. A number of research proposals have come up with innovative query transmission approaches in order to scale down congestion, route latency and energy consumption to the feasible extent. It has been shown experimentally that these approaches have mainly focused on checking propagation of route query using query broadcast repealing technique which unfortunately paves way to additional routing overhead. This leads to increased energy-consumption which offsets the benefits. This paper introduces a self-aware query-broadcast approach which is dynamic in nature and obtains desirable path in discovery phase without counterbalancing the advantages reaped from confining the request zones. The proposed approach relies on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which utilizes the routing metrics in estimating the weighing factors for combined weight metrics. For evaluation of the proposed technique, critical and analytical assessment is done in terms of query-diffusion, packet-delivery ratio and route-latency. The results reveal the proposed approach is ideal, optimal and highly practical for application in WANETs.

A flooding algorithm aims to distribute messages to all nodes within the mobile environment. In a simple flooding scheme, every node broadcasts a newly received message. However, this simple mechanism generates massive redundant messages, which is referred to as the broadcast storm problem. To ease the negative effect of the broadcast storm problem, we proposed a novel scheme, Probabilistic Second-chance broadcasting with/without Global positioning system information (PSG) in wireless ad hoc networks, which amalgamates the merits of probability-based and location-based flooding algorithms. PSG eases the broadcast storm problem by reducing the total number of transmissions and does not require hello messages from neighboring nodes, yet achieves better results than Multipoint Relaying Flooding (MPR), a neighbor-knowledgebased flooding scheme, by accurately determining whether subsequent forwarding is advantageous while a node receives a broadcasting message. We also discuss the advantages of a two-phase/second-time algorithm and utilize a simplified topology to further explain and demonstrate the merits of second-time broadcasting. We compare our PSG scheme with the simple flooding scheme, the probabilistic schemes with different preassigned probabilities, and the MPR schemes with or without the overhead of hello messages. The simulation results show that our scheme demands fewer forwarding nodes to rebroadcast messages and therefore lowers the total number of transmissions. PSG scales down a large number of collisions and attains high delivery ratios compared to other flooding algorithms. Current efforts for providing an efficient dynamic source routing protocol (DSR) for use in multi-hop ad-hoc wireless are promising. This is since DSR has a unique characteristic in that it uses source routing, instead of relying on the routing table at each intermediate device. This study addresses the current challenges facing DSR protocol in terms of the dynamic changes of the route and how to update such changes into the route cache of the DSR. The challenges typically persist when a sudden route break occurs resulting in a delay in updating the new node location into the cache of the DSR protocol. For that, this study proposes a novel algorithm to improve the cache updating of DSR protocol in the ad-hoc network using dominating set-based routing (DBR). In DBR, the dominating nodes establish node update cache in accordance with the characteristics of the new route. Network Simulator version 2 (NS2) was used to implement and evaluate the proposed algorithm. A comparison of certain performance metrics was carried among the proposed DSR-DBR, DSR-route-cache, and DSR-original in the transmission control protocol and user datagram protocol. The DSR-DBR performance result showed a significant improvement in the average throughput, average end-to-end delay, average discovery time and routing overhead.
