Caching on the move: Towards D2D-based information centric networking for mobile content distribution

Abstract: With the advent of device-to-device (D2D) communications, user equipment (UE) such as smart phones will become an integral part of the (mobile) network for content distribution operations. In this context, we introduce a novel Information centric networking (ICN) framework for mobile content caching and distribution based on direct D2D communications in cellular network environments. Specifically, small pieces of mobile content can be cached at incentivised mobile UEs known as helpers, and the ICN-aware cellul… Show more

“…Moreover, user's relationship is used to create cost function as well social ties and physical distance. The authors in [19] discussed content distribution in D2D communication network. A novel information centric networking framework using mobile content caching and distribution for direct D2D communication was proposed.…”

“…Since the cache size of a CH is limited, cache replacement/eviction policy plays a great role to increase hit ratio. In general, BS instead of serving separately each user's requesting (a popular video, or popular news), pre‐pushed a few copies of the content in some CHs and they can further forward it to any other user that makes a request for it [12, 13]. The main duties of the BS are to select CHs for a community, to pre‐push the popular contents toward the CHs to cache, and to deliver requested data directly to the requester if not hit locally.…”

“…Traditionally, researches on in-network caching have been mainly conducted in the context of fixed ISP networks. However, there have also been recent proposals that are made towards caching at the edge of mobile cellular networks [12] or at the device side [3].…”
