Calcineurin promotes proliferation, migration, and invasion of small cell lung cancer

Abstract: A novel role for calcineurin (Cn) has been reported recently regarding the oncogenic potential in pancreatic and colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the putative causal role calcineurin could play in the development of lung cancer with bone metastases. We found that CnAalpha, an isoform of calcineurin, was significantly overexpressed in lung cancer tissues with bone metastasis as compared to tumors with non-bone metastases as investigated by RT-PCR. Strong nuclear staining of tumor cell… Show more

“…The dysregulation of Ca 2+ homeostasis has been implicated as an important driver in the development of metastatic phenotypes (5) . Numerous studies demonstrate that Ca 2+ -binding proteins (e.g., S100 proteins (69) , calmodulin (10, 11) , calcineurin (12, 13) ) have the potential to promote tumor progression.…”

“…Lung cancer is the leading cancer in terms of mortality and morbidity in the world, and adenocarcinomas are common histological types of lung cancer (1,2). The International Society for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), the American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society jointly published a histological classification of lung adenocarcinomas in 2011 (3).…”

“…(8)(9)(10) Zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) is an E-box transcriptional inducer that has emerged as a key player in cancer progression. The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays an important role in tumor invasion and is closely related with development and progression of tumors.…”
