Calcium involvement in mediating the action of octopamine and hypertrehalosemic peptides on insect haemocytes

Abstract: Octopamine, the hypertrehalosemic peptides HT-I and HT-II and the calcium ionophore A23187 elevate intracellular calcium levels in cultured haemocytes of Malaeosoma disstria (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae). The octopamine-mediated response is dose-dependent and the magnitude of the response is influenced by the concentration of calcium in the incubation medium. Mianserin, an inhibitor of octopamine-mediated elevation of cyclic AMP production, blocks the octopamine-mediated increase in intracellular calcium but ha… Show more

“…He proposed 3 subtypes and organized them into 2 major classes. OCT-1 receptors coupled to increases in intracellular calcium fluxes, a similar physiological response displayed by other insects (Jahagirdar, 1987). OCT-2 receptors were of two pharmacologically distinguishable subtypes, 2A and 2B, but both coupled to increases in cAMP (Evans, 1981;Evans, 1984;Evans & Robb, 1993).…”

“…Some insect octopamine receptors are thought to be coupled to the IP 3 system that activates the release of Ca ?? from internal stores (Jahagirdar et al 1987;Baines and Downer 1994). U-73122 is an inhibitor of phospholipase C, the enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of IP 3 from phosphotidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate.…”

“…In cockroach fat body cells hypertrehalosemic hormone HT I ( = NHD) activates phosphorylase kinase only if external Ca 2+ is present (Orr et al 1985). In blowfly blood cells the same hormone elevates the intracellular [Ca 2+] (Jahagirdar et al 1987). Another adipokinetic hormone, AKH I, stimulates glycogenolysis in the locust.…”

“…Subsequently it was shown to be an octapeptide of the amino acid sequence pGlu-Val-Asn-PheSer-Pro-Asn-TrpNH2 (Scarborough et al 1984;Baumann and Penzlin 1984;Witten et al 1984). Neurohormone D is also termed myotropin I , periplanetin CC I (Scarborough et al 1984), hypertrehalosemic hormone HT I (Orr et al 1985;Jahagirdar et al 1987) and Pea-CAH-I (Raina and G/ide 1988).…”
