Calcium Phosphate Crystallization on Electrospun Cellulose Non‐Woven Fabrics Containing Synthetic Phosphorylated Polypeptides

Abstract: The preparation of electrospun non‐woven fabrics composed of cellulose and synthetic phosphorylated polypeptides, copoly[Ser(PO3H2)XAspY]s (X:Y = 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75), is described. The non‐wovens were subjected to an alternate immersion in CaCl2 and Na2HPO4 solutions to induce crystallization of calcium phosphate. The deposited calcium phosphate crystals were analyzed by means of EDX analysis and WXRD. The amounts of calcium phosphate deposition are greater for the cellulose non‐woven fabrics containin… Show more

“…13 C NMR and DEPT spectra were recorded on Bruker Spectrometer (50, 100, or 125 MHz), and reported relative signals according to the deuterated solvent used. 31 P NMR spectra recorded on Bruker Spectrometer (202.46 MHz) using an internal 85 % aqueous H 3 PO 4 as reference. FT-IR spectra were recorded on a Perkin-Elmer FT-IR spectrum GX instrument by making KBr pellets.…”

“…The use of such phosphorylation and de‐phosphorylation reactions have triggered the disintegration and modulation of polymeric assemblies and nanoparticles . In addition to that, phosphonate, in comparison to phosphate, may regulate mineral deposition differently during biomineralization due to its somewhat differing geometry . Taken together, direct carbon‐phosphorous linkage in phosphono polypeptides may limit their ability to mimic natural phosphoproteins .…”

“…Figure 4 is an example study for this approach, and the cellulose-ESNW subcomponent is a synthetic polypeptide, copoly[Ser(PO 3 H 2 ) x , Asp y ] ( x : y = 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75), on which serine residues are fully phosphorylated. The weight ratio of copoly[Ser(PO 3 H 2 ) x , Asp y ] towards cellulose was 1.0–1.2 wt % in a TFA solution, and then after the ES process, the products, cellulose-copoly[Ser(PO 3 H 2 ) x , Asp y ]-composite-ESNW, was observed using a scanning electron microscope (Figure 4) [47]. The chemical structure of copoly[Ser(PO 3 H 2 ) x , Asp y ] was designed on the basis of osteogenic proteins, of which their role is to induce the hydroxyapatite deposition to make hard tissues, teeth and bone.…”

“…We then continued a series of applied research studies using the composite ESNWs which were prepared from polysaccharides–synthetic phosphorylated poly(amino acid)s for crystallization of the calcium phosphate in an aqueous environment. 6,7 More recently, we have reported the immobilization of an enzyme on the chemically modified hydroxypropyl cellulose ESNWs. 8…”
