Recebido em 23/8/11; aceito em 3/11/11; publicado na web em 4/1/12Caesalpinia peltophoroides is a domesticated tree found in Brazil. It was necessary to develop an analytical method to determine the content of total polyphenols (TP) in this herbal drug. The pre-analytical method was standardized for analysis time, wavelength, and the best standard to use. The optimum conditions were: pyrogallol, 760 nm, and 30 min respectively. Under these conditions, validation by UV/Vis spectrophotometry proved to be reliable for TP of the crude extract and semipurified fractions from C. peltophoroides. Standardization is required for every herbal drug, and this method proved to be linear, precise, accurate, reproducible, robust, and easy to perform.

Research on DNA binding antitumor agents has been classically steered by either non-covalent (DNA intercalation) or covalent (DNA alkylation) interactions. In this context bi-functional anticancer molecules are particularly attractive since they are capable of sequential DNA intercalation followed by DNA alkylation. Here we describe the synthesis and in vitro anticancer activity of bi-functional 1,8-naphthalimide N(4) and S(4)-derivatives. Cell viability assays indicate that our amonafide-N-mustard chimeras are selective, effective only on certain tumor cell lines, and less toxic toward nonmalignant cells than the drug amonafide. The biological activities of the bi-functional derivatives presented here are encouraging and the compounds are suitable for further optimization and in vivo studies. Natural prenyloxycinnamic acids were shown to exert in vitro and in vivo remarkable and valuable anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects. Among these, 4 0 -geranyloxyferulic acid [3-(4 0 -geranyloxy-3 0 -methoxyphenyl)-2-trans-propenoic acid] was discovered as an efficient orally active chemopreventive agent of several types of cancer, and its structural analogue boropinic acid was shown to exert a valuable inhibitory effect both in vitro and in vivo against the growth of Helicobacter pylori. As a continuation of our chemical, chemico-physical, and pharmacological studies on these secondary metabolites, we report herein the comparison between traditional UV/Vis assays and HPLC-DAD methods for the determination of the molar absorptivity coefficient of 4 0 -geranyloxyferulic acid (e 310 = 12,950 and e 288 = 11,910 L mol -1 cm -1 ) and boropinic acid (e 310 = 13,510 and e 288 = 12,350 L mol -1 cm -1
