Calibration of a convective parameterization scheme in the WRF model and its impact on the simulation of East Asian summer monsoon precipitation

Abstract: Reasonably modeling the magnitude, southnorth gradient and seasonal propagation of precipitation associated with the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is a challenging task in the climate community. In this study we calibrate five key parameters in the Kain-Fritsch convection scheme in the WRF model using an efficient importance-sampling algorithm to improve the EASM simulation. We also examine the impacts of the improved EASM precipitation on other physical process. Our results suggest similar model sensitivit… Show more

“…In addition, compared to VFRGCM, RCM has more complex model physical parameterizations, which will inevitably induce large model uncertainty. The uncertainty in model physics can evidently affect the simulated results (Yang et al, 2015a(Yang et al, , 2015b. This may be one of the reasons for the more realistic trend of air temperature produced by the VFRGCM compared with RCM dynamical downscaling.…”

“…However, RCM dynamic downscaling produced a smaller bias than the VFRGCM despite their almost equal horizontal resolutions. The differences may be attributable to the more comprehensive physical processes of the RCM dynamical downscaling approach compared with the VFRGCM (Yang et al, 2015a(Yang et al, , 2015b.…”

“…Moreover, the algorithm has convergence issues when the simplex becomes ill-conditioned. Besides the downhill simplex, a few global optimization algorithms are introduced to tune uncertain parameters of climate system models, such as simulated stochastic approximation annealing (SSRR) , MVFSA (Yang et al, 2014), and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) (Gill et al, 2006). SSRR requires at least 10 000 steps to get a stable solution (Liang et al, 2013), and MVFSA also requires thousands of steps to get a stable solution (Jackson et al, 2004).…”

“…The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is a latest generation mesoscale NWP system that has been widely used for rainfall simulation and prediction (Efstathiou et al, 2013;Yang et al, 2015). Although rainfall products can be directly used due to the high accuracy of rain or no rain predictions, the WRF model still cannot ensure accurate rainfall quantities or spatiotemporal distributions 10 (GPS) radio occultation (RO) data were used with WRF-3DVar (Ha et al, 2014).…”
