Caliope: an operational air quality forecasting system for the Iberian Peninsula, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands – first annual evaluation and ongoing developments

Abstract: Abstract. The Caliope project funded by the Spanish Ministry of the Environment establishes an air quality forecasting system for Spain to increase the knowledge on transport and dynamics of pollutants in Spain, to assure the accomplishment of legislation and to inform the population about the levels of pollutants, topics in which the European Commission has shown a great concern. The present contribution describes the first quantitative verification study performed so far with two chemistry transport models (… Show more

“…In the frame of the CALIOPE system (Baldasano et al, 2008a; http://www.bsc.es/caliope), the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) operates an air quality forecasting system for Spain (at 4 km × 4 km horizontal resolution) and Europe (at 12 km × 12 km horizontal resolution) with WRF-ARW/HERMES-EMEP/CMAQ and desert dust forecasts with BSC-DREAM8b (Nickovic et al, 2001;Pérez et al, 2006a, b). In contrast to many other European modelling systems, CALIOPE includes a non-climatic representation of Saharan dust transport in its forecast mode.…”

“…High concentrations of NO 2 within the PBL are directly related to anthropogenic NO x emission. Baldasano et al (2008a) estimated that the largest NO x emission sources come from combustion in energy and transformation industries (41% of NO x total emission) followed by road transport (37% of NO x total emission).…”
