Camels ratio analysis for participation banks with Maut method: Comparison pre and post Covid-19

Abstract

The first cases of COVID-19 outbreak, which has come upon the world in a short period of time, coincided with the last month of the first quarter of the year 2020 in Turkey. In this process, the measurements aiming to prevent the pandemic caused a decrease in the interest rates in the banking sector for the short term, resulting in increases in credit demand. In this process, participation banks have also announced support packages to meet the needs of business owners or individuals who want to make interest-free transactions. Accordingly, these support packages declared by the participation banks in the short term will affect their performances in the ongoing process, changing the balances. In this study, it was aimed to measure the performance of six participation banks operating in Turkey through their CAMELS rates using the MAUT technique. The rates were calculated through the CAMELS, in which consolidated financial statements and independent audit reports were used for the first quarter and second quarters of 2020. Subsequently, the ratio directions were determined and the performances of six participation banks were examined by following a macro approach using the MAUT method, one of the MCDM (Multi-Criteria Decision Making) methods, that aims at transparent decision making. The first quarter of 2020 was calculated as the pre-COVID period, and the second quarter of 2020 was separately calculated as the post-COVID period, and the pandemic effect was analyzed. As a result, the best performance was determined to be of the Türkiye Finans Participation Bank in the first quarter of 2020 and the Vakıf Participation Bank in the second quarter of 2020.
