Can betaine partially replace or enhance the effect of methionine by improving broiler growth and carcase characteristics?

Abstract: 1. Growth rates and carcase characteristics were measured in male broiler chickens fed on a control diet deficient in methionine (c. 2.8 g/kg methionine) or a series of diets containing graded levels of betaine or DL-methionine or both additives. 2. We aimed to answer 2 main questions. First, can betaine replace part of the methionine in a broiler ration? Secondly is there a synergism between methionine and betaine? 3. Birds given the control diet or that supplemented only with betaine ate less, grew more slow… Show more

“…De modo geral, alguns estudos não conseguiram provar o efeito benéfico da suplementação da betaína sobre as variáveis de desempenho zootécnico, mesmo se aplicando níveis nutricionais subótimos e desafios ambientais (Rostagno & Pack, 1996;Schutte et al, 1997;Esteve-Garcia & Mack, 2000;Mcdevitt et al, 2000;Kermanshahi, 2001).…”

“…In these studies, betaine was twice as efficient as methionine. According to the results of several other studies, betaine and methionine cannot replace each other (for example, Schutte et al 1997;McDevitt et al 2000). The extent to which methionine can be substituted by betaine may depend on the dietary supply of cystine as well.…”

“…Due to reductions in carcass fat content and higher percentages of lean carcass, betaine is often referred to as a 'carcass modifier'. In poultry, reductions in abdominal fat were obtained (for example, McDevitt et al 2000;Wang, 2000) and breast-muscle yield was enhanced (for example, Firman & Remus, 1999) (Table 3). In pigs, carcass fat content was reduced by as much as 10 to 18 % (Wang et al 2000b;Fernandez-Figares et al 2002) (Table 3).…”

“…It is feasible that the potentially beneficial effects of betaine were negated by the fishmeal in the diet, which would have provided choline (Kidd et al, 1997). However, the inability of betaine to compensate for suboptimal levels of methionine are consistent with the findings of McDevitt et al (2000).…”
