Can heart rate variability parameters derived by a heart rate monitor differentiate between atrial fibrillation and sinus rhythm?

Abstract: BackgroundHeart rate variability (HRV) parameters, and especially RMSSD (root mean squared successive differences in RR interval), could distinguish atrial fibrillation (AF) from sinus rhythm(SR) in horses, as was demonstrated in a previous study. If heart rate monitors (HRM) automatically calculating RMSSD could also distinguish AF from SR, they would be useful for the monitoring of AF recurrence. The objective of the study was to assess whether RMSSD values obtained from a HRM can differentiate AF from SR in… Show more

“…Independent of cardioversion method, long‐term monitoring of horses at home for AF recurrence is important as recurrence can occur months or years after cardioversion. Regular auscultation is one potential solution but simple heart rate monitoring systems with basic heart rate variability analysis that can be used by the owner, have proven effective for recurrence screening 198,199 . Implantable recording devices have some potential 89 .…”

“…A Holter ECG may be obtained in cases where paroxysmal AF (PAF) is suspected. Also heart rate monitors are able to distinguish AF from sinus rhythm (SR) 7 . However, for practical reasons, the duration of heart rate monitor recordings or Holter ECGs is limited to a few days and electrodes can be cumbersome to keep in place.…”

“…The inability to distinguish between supraventricular arrhythmias, ventricular arrhythmias, or an ordinary artifact significantly limits its diagnostic value. The possibility for potentially overlooking a life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia is highly likely [ 8 ]. The emergence of ECG recording, which is already offered by some HRMs in conjunction with smartphone applications, was a significant advancement.…”
