Can Industrial Restructuring Improve Urban Air Quality?—A Quasi-Experiment in Beijing during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: The conflict between economic growth and environmental pollution has become a considerable bottleneck to future development throughout the world. The industrial structure may become the possible key factor in resolving the contradiction. Using the daily data of air quality from January to April in 2019 and 2020, we used the DID model to identify the effects of industrial structure on air quality by taking the COVID-19 pandemic as a quasi-experiment. The results show that, first, the impact of profit of the sec… Show more

“…Many studies have pointed out that the construction of smart cities will accelerate industrial structure upgrading (Lom et al 2016). At the same time, relevant studies have pointed out that industrial structure upgrading can also promote pollutant emission reduction (Hao et al 2020, Tao et al 2022. Industrial structure upgrading is an important way to achieve sustainable development.…”

“…Disease containment, industrial production, and traditional customs have all been demonstrated to rapidly affect regional air quality. Tao et al found that prevention measures to control the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by reducing vehicle movement and factory production levels could improve air quality [10]. Wang et al reported that prohibiting fireworks during the Lunar New Year in Shanghai, China could effectively reduce the PM 2.5 concentration [11,12].…”

“…Due to the extensive economic growth, the consumption of resources and energy has increased ( 2 ), the level of biodiversity has decreased, and the contradiction between human habitat activity and ecological environment has become increasingly prominent ( 3 ). As a result of extensive economic growth ( 4 ), air pollution has become a global city disease in contemporary society threatening both human lives and economic development ( 5 , 6 ). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is one of the main environmental hazards to human health.…”
